The Isle of Harris is one of the most beautiful islands in the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles of Scotland. All along the west coast of the southern part of Harris (South Harris) there are numerous spectacular beaches backed in some parts by sand dunes while in others hills and mountains. In some areas of South Harris there is a small piece of land between the beach and the main body of land that is called machair. Machair is the name given to a rare and specific type of land, which is continually dressed in shell sand, is extremely fertile and usually has an abundance of wildflowers.

Many people visiting the Outer Hebrides / Western Isles choose to spend some time on Harris and some time on one of the other Hebridean islands so that they can see as much of the islands as possible in just one visit. Although we would say that it would be better to stay on one island one year and visit again the next, staying on a different island.
