The Isle of Lewis is one of the most beautiful islands in the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles of Scotland. Lewis makes up more than one half of the 'Long Island' which is hte name given to the land mass that is Lewis and Harris. Although many assume the Isle of Lewis to be a barren landscape of moorland there could be nothing further from the truth. From the rugged areas around the Port of Ness to the spectacular beaches at Uig and along the west coast, the Isle of Lewis offers a varied landscape which is always beautiful. Even the moors can be incredible places, what is more beautiful than a view of a slightly misty moor with a large loch with the Harris hills as a dramatic backdrop?
Of course there are some areas of the Isle of Lewis that are simply beyond compare! The image to the left shows a not so common view of only one of several sites at Calais on West Lewis. The well known standing stones at Calanais are renowned for being amongst the most important stone circles in Europe.
If you are a keen photographer then the Isle of Lewis is covered in amazing spots that cry out to be photographed. A photographer may visit one day and get a few really good shots and return the next and get some others but those on the second day will, more than likely, be completely different to those of the previous day. The weather has a lot to do with this, the Hebridean light is almost unique, it creates very moody scenes and the most incredible sunsets and sunrises that you are likely to witness in the whole of the United Kingdom. SO, on a clear day a photo may crisp and sharp but early evening with a deep red or orange setting sun creates a more mystical scene with long shadows and multiple hues.

Probably Stornoway's most well known, and widely regarded as the towns finest, hotel is the Caberfeidh Hotel situated on the Outskirts opposite the Lews Castle grounds and set back off the road. The Caladh Inn, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis
The Caladh Inn is owned by the same hotel group as the Caberfeidh but is found on the opposite side of Stornoway on the outskirts heading towards Stornoway airport (making it the most convenient hotel to it). The Caladh Inn is the town's largest hotel and very popular with businessmen, who benefit from the wireless Internet and other services, and the tourist alike. The Caladh Inn is within but a few minutes walk from the very centre of Stornoway. No Pets Allowed.
The Royal Hotel, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis
By comparing the photograph to your left with those of the Caberfeidh and Caladh you will notice how much older the Royal Hotel looks in style. The reason why the Royal Hotel looks so wonderful is the fact that it was built in the middle of the nineteenth century and has managed to retain much of it's character and retain many of it's period features (in the front facing rooms) while also offering all the modern services we should expect from such a first class hotel. Only a minute or two from the town centre and with the marina to the front this hotel is extremely popular. Of special note is the hotels cuisine served in their Boatshed Restaurant.
