Outer Hebrides Accommodation

A glorious beach on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles of ScotlandThe Outer Hebrides of Scotland (also known as the Western Isles) are a group of islands which are situated off the west coast of Scotland right on the very periphery of Europe. To the west of the Isles is the North Atlantic Ocean and to the east as small but often deadly stretch of water known as the Minch. It is then little wonder that the islands have always been associated with the sea.

At one time the Outer Hebrides were not part of the nation of Scotland, rather, they were part of a Manx/Norwegian empire. The Norse (Vikings) had a great respect of the Hebrides and many placenames bear their influence, for example the main town of Stornoway was named by the Norse and literally means 'Steering Bay'. In more recent times the harvest from the sea has had a major influence on the islands. Towards the end of the 19th century, and the beginning of the 20th, Stornoway was one of the largest herring ports in Europe exporting pickled herrings to Russia and many towns around the Baltic Sea. At that time the whole quayside at Stornoway was a hive of activity with thousands of barrels stacked up ready for export. Sadly the herring industry went into sharp decline (near collapse) with the outbreak of World War One which closed virtually all of the markets abroad and demands at home had always been low.

Today the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles still have a, much reduced, fishing fleet but fish farming and other industries have become more important to the region. Tourism to the Outer Hebrides has existed for hundreds of years but in recent decades more and more tourists have been visiting annually and now tourism accounts for much of the islands income. The accommodation provided in the Outer Hebrides has always been of the highest standards but each and every year more improvements are being made to nearly every establishment. The accommodation listed below is amongst the best accommodation in the Outer Hebrides.
