The islands of the Hebrides include some of the most beautiful places in Scotland and many places on those islands are unique (such as Fingal's Cave at Staffa).
When people visit the Hebrides they like to enjoy as much of the Hebridean culture as possible. For many this may involve staying bed and breakfast in Stornoway and attending the famous Hebridean Celtic Festival while, for others, they would rather stay self catering in a remote area such as South Harris, relaxing on one of the gret many wonderful beaches in the area.
Staying in self catering accommodation in the Hebrides is always an experience to be remebered. If you stay in a self catering house it will, more than likely, be a traditional stone built house with extra thick walls of the type seen all over the islands. At one time these houses would not have been common, rather they would be very rare and the common abode then would have been a blackhouse (one shown to the left). The blackhouse is a cottage-like building with a thatch roof.
Sadly most of the, once common, blackhouses are now little more than an outline of rubble having been deserted more than a century ago. Happily some have been restored and some have been renovated (or recreated using traditional techniques). It is possible to hire a few of these blackhouses as self catering accommodation. Of course the blackhouses that can be rented have been fully modernised to todays high building standards and include all modern fixtures and fittings. You will be amazed at how luxurious a blackhouse can be.

Steading Cottages, Borvemor, Scarista, Isle of Harris, Outer Hebrides/Western Isles
Stable Cottage and Byre Cottage, though distinctly self contained, together form Steading Cottages close to the shores in Scarista. With one cottage able to sleep five and the other six the cottages are suitable for groups of eleven. Borvemor Blackhouse, Borvemor, Scarista, Isle of Harris, Outer Hebrides/Western Isles
Pictured at the top of this page and to the left is the wonderfully romantic Borevemor Blackhouse which is a wonderful thatched cottage-like building which was the common abode across the Hebrides up until the last century. Some blackhouses remained inhabited until the second half of the twentieth century but all but a few have now been abandoned.
Some have blackhouses been lovingly restored to how they would have been in the distant past while one or two have been preserved how they were when last inhabited. Borvemore Blackhouse has the most wonderful, and thoroughly modern, interior and is an extremely popular self catering accommodation so enquire quickly if you wish to book.
